Cropping narrows the window a PDF reader shows and a printer prints, so unwanted margins or page furniture simply stop being part of the page. It changes the page’s own boundary boxes rather than redrawing anything, which is why text stays selectable and line art stays sharp — a cropped page is the same page, just smaller.
When to use it
When a scan has a black border or a strip of the scanner bed down one side, when a slide deck exported to PDF carries margins you do not want on paper, or when only one panel of a large drawing needs to be shared.
What it will not do
The content outside the crop is hidden, not deleted — it is still in the file and can be recovered by widening the page again, so cropping is not a way to remove something private. Use Redact PDF for that. The file also does not get much smaller, because nothing is thrown away. Cropping cannot straighten a skewed scan or crop at an angle: the frame is always square to the page.
