More about this tool

This reads the text of each PDF page in your browser, finds where it lines up in columns, and writes an Excel workbook (.xlsx) with the text in its rows and columns. Amounts become real numbers — with their thousands separators, decimals, negatives and percentages — so they can be sorted, filtered and added up. Nothing is uploaded.

When to use it

When you need to work with the numbers in a PDF rather than just read them: a bank or credit card statement to categorise, an invoice or quotation to check, a price list or inventory to update, a report's table to chart.

What it will not do

A PDF records where each piece of text is drawn, not which table it belongs to, so the grid is worked out from how the text lines up — check it before relying on it, especially where one cell's text runs into the next column. Borders, colours and merged cells do not come across, and identifiers such as account and phone numbers are kept as text so their leading zeros survive. A scanned PDF is a picture and holds no text until OCR PDF adds some — run it through that first.

Common questions

Will the numbers work in Excel, or come across as text?

They come across as real numbers — with their thousands separators, decimals, negatives in parentheses or with a minus, currency signs and percentages — so you can sort, filter and add them up. Account and phone numbers stay text so their leading zeros are kept.

Can it convert a bank statement that runs over several pages?

Yes. Each page gets its own sheet, or turn on “Put all pages on one sheet” to have every page’s rows together, ready to sort and total.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

Not directly — a scanned page is a picture of a table with no text inside it. Run it through OCR PDF on this site first, then convert the result. Tables read that way need extra checking, since the numbers come from recognition.
