When to use it
Use form flattening after completing an application, layer flattening to lock a chosen document view, or full rasterization when the final copy must display consistently and resist ordinary editing or copy-paste.
What it will not do
Keep the original: flattening is intentionally hard to reverse. Uncommon annotations without a usable appearance stream are preserved and reported instead of silently removed. Full rasterization removes search, selection, accessibility text, and vector sharpness, and may substantially increase file size.
Common questions
What does flattening a PDF do?
It makes things that can normally still change — filled-in form fields, comments, layers — a permanent part of the page. You choose how far: forms and comments only, the visible layers, or every page turned into a fixed image.
Can I undo flattening?
Not easily — that is the point of it. Keep a copy of the original before you flatten.
Will the text still be searchable?
Flattening forms and comments leaves ordinary text as it was. Full rasterisation turns each page into an image, so search, copy-paste and selection stop working and the file may grow.
