This converts a Word document (.docx) into a PDF without uploading it anywhere. The file is read in your browser — the real Word format, not a simplified version of it — and written out as a PDF with real selectable text, the document’s own fonts, colours and margins, headers, footers and working links.
When to use it
When something has to be submitted as a PDF: an application form, a report, a letter, a resume. Also when you want a file that opens the same way on every device, which a .docx does not.
What it will not do
Headers, footers and page numbers come across, and the numbers are counted for the PDF rather than copied from the file. So do columns: a section set in two or three columns is poured into them and evened out, with the rule between them if the document asks for one. What does not come across: comments, and a page size, orientation or margin that changes partway through — the last setting in the document is used throughout, so only the columns vary between sections. A table of contents or a cross-reference keeps the value Word last calculated instead of being worked out again. Typefaces are matched exactly only if you allow the page to use the fonts installed on your device; otherwise a standard typeface of the same kind stands in and every line is held to its original width. The older .doc format cannot be read at all — save it as .docx first.
