More about this tool

Compressing requantizes and, when a DPI target calls for it, downsamples the embedded JPEG photos and scans that make up most of a PDF's weight, strips redundant file structure, and can remove the author/creation-tool metadata a PDF carries about itself. It runs in your browser, with a live size estimate as you adjust the settings and a before/after page preview so you can see the tradeoff before committing.

When to use it

Whenever a PDF is turned away by an email or upload form for being too big — including a scan or a photo-heavy file, not just text-heavy documents.

What it will not do

Only JPEG-filtered images decode reliably enough in a browser to recompress safely. CMYK photos and images saved in other formats — raw samples, fax-style scans, indexed colour — are left byte-identical rather than risk corrupting or discolouring them, and fonts are never subset. Where a file is mostly one of those, the size barely moves, and the estimate says so before you download rather than after.

Common questions

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what the file is made of. Photos and JPEG scans shrink the most; a PDF that is mostly text or other image types barely moves. The live estimate shows the size before you download.

Can I compress several PDFs at once?

Yes. Add more than one file, pick a level, and check the preview of each before downloading.

Does it remove hidden information from the file?

It can remove the author and creation-tool metadata a PDF carries about itself, along with redundant file structure. It does not redact what is on the pages — use Redact PDF for that.
